Joy-Con Mouse Theory for Nintendo Switch 2 Gains Traction

Apr 13,25

The excitement around the Nintendo Switch 2 has reached new heights following this morning's reveal, particularly with the intriguing possibility of using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse. During the reveal trailer, we saw a moment where detached Joy-Cons were placed attachment side down onto a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors that allowed them to glide like a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of these connectors, adding fuel to the speculation.

Rumors had been circulating prior to the reveal about a potential sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to that found in a computer mouse, which could enable this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or explain the potential implications. Fans are buzzing with ideas on how this could enhance gameplay, particularly for games like Civilization that traditionally benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Others speculate that Nintendo might leverage this feature in innovative ways with their first-party titles, given their track record of creative gameplay mechanics.

While the potential for mouse support on the Switch 2 remains unconfirmed, we do have some solid information about the console. It's officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release slated for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More details on the software lineup will be unveiled at a Direct event in April. You can find all the latest on the Nintendo Switch 2 [ttpp] here.
