MultiVersus Fans Bid Farewell: 'Game Holds Special Place in Hearts'

Jun 04,25

MultiVersus, the anticipated 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, is set to go offline permanently soon. In January, Player First Games confirmed that Season 5 would mark the end, with the game ceasing operations at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT) on May 30, 2025. The closure has been attributed to poor performance, leading Warner Bros. Discovery to report a $100 million write-down for its gaming division, pushing the total losses to $300 million following the underwhelming release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier in the year.

In response to the announcement, Warner Bros. promptly canceled plans for a Wonder Woman game and shut down three studios, including Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and the developers behind MultiVersus, Player First Games.

In a heartfelt thread titled "Tomorrow MultiVersus shuts down, what are the final things you have to say about the game," hundreds of players chimed in to share their fondest memories. One participant reminisced fondly, stating, "MultiVersus was a dream—a platform fighter that emphasized quick offense and 2v2 gameplay, fostering incredible team synergy. Even the character selections were fantastic, with many voice actors reprising their iconic roles, such as Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and others. Interactions between characters during matches were equally delightful."

Despite the perplexing roster choices and some questionable mechanics, the commenter acknowledged, "The majority of the movesets were truly inspired. There will never be another game quite like MultiVersus."

Another player recalled, "I'll never forget getting hooked during the beta in 2022. Its fast-paced nature kept me glued. I'll miss it dearly and hope it makes a comeback someday."

One commenter nostalgically remarked, "This game holds a special place in my heart, right alongside PlayStation All-Stars." Another added, "Tom and Jerry brought me back to fighting games and remains uniquely enjoyable."

While some players remain hopeful for a revival, the general consensus acknowledges the challenges ahead due to the significant intellectual property hurdles involved. Despite this, a few enthusiasts are determined to keep the spirit alive even after the servers shut down.

We reviewed MultiVersus at IGN, awarding it an 8 and noting its refreshing team-based battles as a standout feature in the platform fighter genre.
