MultiVersus to End Service Post-Season 5 in May

Apr 25,25

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, with its final day set for May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. In a detailed blog post on their website, the studio shared their decision to discontinue support for the crossover brawler. Launched on May 28 of the previous year, MultiVersus will kick off its final Season 5 on February 4, 2025, and run until its scheduled conclusion. At that point, online play will cease, but Player First Games assures players that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline through local gameplay and training modes.

Expressing gratitude, the MultiVersus team stated, “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

As of today, real-money transactions for MultiVersus have been disabled, though players can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the game's support ends on May 30. Additionally, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project a significant failure. During a financial call in November, the company revealed that MultiVersus performed much worse than anticipated, leading to a $100 million writedown for its games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in losses, following the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Just last week, Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad announced his departure from the company, marking a challenging year in 2024.

Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels commented during the November call, "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline."

Despite the closure announcement coming just days before MultiVersus's one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to be a memorable farewell. Along with the usual new content, the season will introduce playable characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman. Starting next week, players can unlock the Looney Tunes icon through a daily calendar reward, while the DC superhero will be available via the battle pass.
