Nexon and Blizzard Ink Deal: Overwatch Mobile May Launch Soon

May 02,25

The prospect of Overwatch making its way to mobile devices has long been considered a distant dream, particularly after Jason Schreier's book revealed that a mobile version had been shelved. However, a recent agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard has reignited hopes for an Overwatch mobile release.

The primary focus of this deal centers on the publishing and development rights for a new entry in the beloved StarCraft RTS series. The competition was intense, with companies like Krafton and Netmarble also vying for the opportunity. Should the deal be finalized, Nexon will take the helm in steering future developments of the franchise.

What has stirred significant interest and excitement, though, are reports that the bidding also encompassed publishing rights for an Overwatch mobile version. This revelation not only suggests that the project is still alive but also hints at the possibility of it being an official sequel in the form of a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena).

Nerf thisThis wouldn't mark the first foray of Overwatch into the MOBA genre, as fans may recall Blizzard's previous efforts with Heroes of the Storm. It's conceivable that Heroes of the Storm could make its way to mobile platforms, potentially serving as the Overwatch MOBA in question.

Alternatively, a spin-off release is also within the realm of possibility. However, it's highly unlikely that this would be branded as 'Overwatch 3', given the franchise's traditional focus on console and PC platforms.

Embracing its inherent MOBA influences could be a strategic move for Overwatch, especially with new competitors like Marvel Rivals emerging as potential threats. This could be the impetus Blizzard and their publishing partners need to take bold steps and reinvigorate this once-thriving franchise.
