Warhammer Dev's New Game Echoes Mass Effect, Has Romance

Owlcat Games has revealed The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a story-focused action RPG set in the universe of the popular sci-fi TV series.

The studio, recognized for isometric RPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, is shifting towards a Mass Effect-inspired direction with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The game features an over-the-shoulder third-person view, cover-based shooting, class-based abilities, party management, and companion relationships.

Owlcat mentioned that fans will meet familiar characters, with several original actors returning to voice their roles, though specific names were not shared. Players take on the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary stranded on Eros Station during a deadly lockdown. You'll assemble a crew, command your own ship, and journey across the solar system.

“We've long envisioned creating a sci-fi action RPG of this scope, and The Expanse provides the ideal setting to realize that ambition,” stated Alexander Mishulin, Creative Director at Owlcat.

“It's a universe built on realism and intricate detail, perfectly suited for the kind of storytelling we value — mature, character-focused narratives where player decisions have real impact. We're thrilled to deliver this fresh experience to our audience and can’t wait to share more details, especially since we know our community will have plenty of questions.”

Game Design Producer Yuliya Chernenko acknowledged that the original Mass Effect trilogy “definitely served as a major inspiration for our team.”

“It was a landmark title for the Xbox 360 generation,” Chernenko added. “Many of us first experienced it as teenagers, and it left a profound mark. We aim to honor that legacy while pushing beyond expectations. Our story is deeply embedded in hard sci-fi, a key reason The Expanse universe connects so strongly with its audience. Combat meets the bar for modern action gameplay. The plot explores political tensions and moral ambiguity. And of course — romance is part of the journey too.”

Similar to Mass Effect, in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn you create your own captain (choose to be an Earther, Martian, or Belter and take charge of the system’s most sophisticated vessel), manage a crew (your companions have individual histories, motivations, and influence on your story), and engage in tactical third-person combat with dynamic cover systems, diverse skills, and squad cooperation. And, echoing Mass Effect, you bring two companions into battle while others provide support off the field.

Devotees of The Expanse will be glad to learn that the game includes iconic locations from the series and novels, including Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. This is a narrative-driven RPG, with a plot “rooted in suspense, meaningful choices, and the intricate challenges of humanity’s future in space.” That certainly echoes the tone of The Expanse and, as it happens, Mass Effect.

In terms of the timeline, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn takes place during the first two and a half seasons of the show, corresponding with the initial two books. The game's events unfold parallel to major occurrences in The Expanse television and book series during that period.

A release date has not been announced yet, but Owlcat confirmed The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will launch “soon” on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5.

It’s a productive period for Owlcat Games, which is also developing the recently announced Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy alongside DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. However, the studio identifies The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as its “flagship project.”

“Be assured, the team working on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is entirely separate from Owlcat’s other initiatives and will not compromise the quality of our other titles,” Owlcat confirmed.
