Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Feb 01,25

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location. Fortifying your base against the relentless undead hordes is crucial, and barricading windows is a fundamental step. This guide details how to effectively board up your windows and enhance your base's defenses.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To barricade a window, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential items, simply right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locating Necessary Materials

Hammers and nails are commonly found in typical locations: toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, and similar areas. Wooden planks are frequently discovered at construction sites. In a pinch, you can dismantle wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) to obtain planks. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items.

Enhanced Security and Removal

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry compared to unguarded windows. Multiple planks further increase the time it takes for zombies to breach the defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do so.

Limitations and Alternatives

Larger furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will pass through them. While not suitable for defense, knowing how to move furniture is useful for interior arrangement.

Advanced Barricades

More robust barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
