Jack Black’s Lava Chicken Song Breaks UK Chart Record

If you’ve recently watched A Minecraft Movie in theaters, you likely recall Jack Black’s brief but catchy tune about the lava chicken, featured midway through the film.

Playing the role of Steve, Black performs the 34-second Lava Chicken song as Jason Momoa and others witness a chicken being cooked by falling lava. Despite its brevity, the track has exploded on social media.

Now, Lava Chicken has landed at No. 21 on the UK’s official singles chart, earning the title of the shortest song ever to chart. “Streaming and viral trends are redefining what makes a hit,” said ERA, the UK’s digital entertainment and retail association.

Black is no stranger to viral video game anthems. His 95-second ballad Peaches, a romantic tribute to Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (sung and co-written by Black), reached the Billboard Hot 100. It marked his first solo chart entry, following his 2006 debut at No. 78 with The Pick of Destiny as part of Tenacious D.

Other notably short charted songs include Spider Pig from The Simpsons Movie (64 seconds) in 2007 and Liam Lynch’s 2002 punk track United States of Whatever (86 seconds).

Lava Chicken isn’t the only viral sensation from A Minecraft Movie. Clips of enthusiastic moviegoers, some even bringing live chickens to screenings, have spread rapidly on platforms like TikTok.

More highlights from A Minecraft Movie include the film’s production team running a private Minecraft server for cast and crew. The movie has grossed over $700 million globally, positioning it to potentially become the highest-grossing video game film ever.
