Elven Curse
A simple non-field RPG: Escape the cursed forest. This game challenges you to survive and escape a mysterious forest.
- Prologue -
You're the village's best hunter, drawn to a national hunting tournament near the royal capital. Arriving for the opening ceremony, you camp overnight, only to awaken to find the forest eerily deserted. All the other hunters are gone, leaving behind only the remnants of their camps. The national guard, responsible for overseeing the tournament, has vanished too.
Your attempts to return to the entrance prove fruitless; the forest seems to twist and turn, leading you back to the same spot. Despite your exceptional hunting skills and confident sense of direction, you're hopelessly lost. This is no ordinary predicament.
- What is the "Elven Curse"? -
Aided by a peculiar quarter-elf, you must use your hunting skills to escape this cursed forest. Gameplay is incredibly streamlined, with a maximum of three buttons used at any time (excluding the main menu).
- Character Creation -
While character customization is limited, you can freely reroll your stats. Status increase rates upon leveling up are only viewable on this screen and cannot be checked in-game. This screen serves as a return point. When your "talismans" fall below two, or your life force reaches zero, it's game over.
- Foria, the Peddler Quarter-Elf -
A mysterious boy (or perhaps something else) who claims to be a quarter-elf and older than you. Despite his seemingly detached demeanor, he secretly aids your escape using the power of ancient forest spirits.
- Game World and Narrative -
The prologue unfolds smoothly, like a picture story. Foria’s dialogue is cheerful, contrasting with the game's quiet, evocative atmosphere and suggestive world-building.
- Exploration Mode -
Progress through the forest by exploring unexplored areas. The success of each exploration attempt is determined by the area's "fog depth," influenced by your character's stats. If your life force is depleted, you can use poison to restore it, or, in some cases, precious "talismans." You may also need to return to Foria.
- Beast Encounters & Hunter Battles -
The forest is teeming with dangerous creatures, from wolves and wild dogs to surprisingly aggressive frogs and rabbits. Killing them yields hides for trading with Foria. Unlike typical RPGs, there's no leveling up through combat. The goal is simply escape. All battles are avoidable (though this requires luck or skillful play).
As a hunter, you use a bow and arrow. You can only shoot safely from a distance, avoiding counterattacks. At this range, you can also use wound medicine. Closing the distance, however, leaves you vulnerable to a one-sided attack. You can either attempt a risky retreat or use a "flash" ball provided by Foria for a guaranteed escape.
- Cloak & Layering System -
Using gathered branches, resin, and leather, you can craft a cloak that enhances your abilities. You can layer up to three cloaks, with the total ability boost being the sum of the layers. Rarely, a cloak might restore your life force. Note that your outermost cloak can be damaged and eventually destroyed. This is the only equipment you can change.
