Blizzard Reveals Radical Overhaul of Overwatch 2, Including Return of Loot Boxes, Perks, and Third-Person Mode
Overwatch 2's 2025 Transformation: Perks, New Modes, and More
Overwatch 2 is undergoing a major transformation in 2025, introducing significant gameplay changes alongside new content. Nearly nine years after the original Overwatch's release, Season 15 (February 18th) will introduce hero perks, fundamentally altering the game.
Hero Perks: A Gameplay Revolution
Each hero will receive two selectable perks – minor and major – unlocked at specific points during a match. Minor perks offer subtle upgrades, while major perks significantly alter a hero's abilities. For example, Orisa's Javelin Spin could be replaced with her Barrier, or her Energy Javelin could become chargeable, faster, and piercing. This system resembles the talent trees found in Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.
Stadium Mode: A New Competitive Experience
Season 16 (April) will introduce Stadium mode, a 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode. Players earn currency between rounds to upgrade their heroes' attributes and unlock significant ability changes (e.g., Reaper flying in Wraith Form). This mode features a third-person camera option alongside the traditional first-person view. It will launch with 14 heroes, expanding over time.
Overwatch Classic and 6v6: Returning Modes
Blizzard is also experimenting with 6v6 competitive open queue (two tanks per team) and Overwatch Classic, a throwback mode reviving the "GOATs" meta (three tanks, three supports) from Overwatch 1, arriving mid-Season 16.
New Heroes and Cosmetics
Freja, a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter, arrives in Season 16, followed by Aqua later in the year. Numerous new cosmetics are planned, including a Pixiu-inspired Mythic Zenyatta skin in Season 15, a second collaboration with LE SSERAFIM in March, and additional Mythic skins for Widowmaker, Juno, Mercy, Reaper, and D.Va.
The Return of Loot Boxes
Loot boxes are returning, but only obtainable through free means like the battle pass and weekly rewards. Transparency is key, with players seeing drop rates before opening.
Competitive Updates
Season 15 resets competitive ranks, offering new rewards. Season 16 introduces hero bans and map voting to competitive play. The competitive scene is expanding with a new stage in China, Face.it league integration, and a new tournament system.
These updates promise a significantly refreshed Overwatch 2 experience in 2025.
