Bloodborne Patch Controversy: Sony Issues DMCA Takedown

Feb 11,25

The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a well-known video game modder, announced on Twitter that he received a takedown request from Sony Interactive Entertainment, prompting him to remove links to the patch.

McDonald referenced a past encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he jokingly revealed his creation of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Yoshida's reaction was reportedly laughter.

Bloodborne's lack of an official next-gen patch or remaster remains a significant point of contention among fans. While a 60fps mod existed, recent advancements in PS4 emulation, specifically ShadPS4, now allow for a near-remaster experience on PC at 60fps, as highlighted by Digital Foundry. This development may have contributed to Sony's more assertive action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's absence from next-gen platforms in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, holds a strong personal attachment to Bloodborne and is reluctant to allow anyone else to work on a remaster or sequel, even though the team respects his wishes.

Despite Miyazaki's frequent deflection of Bloodborne questions, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on more modern hardware. The game remains untouched almost a decade after its initial release.
