Sony Unveils teamLFG: A New PlayStation Studio Crafting Team-Based Action Game
Sony has announced the creation of a new PlayStation studio, teamLFG, which originated from the renowned Destiny and Marathon developer, Bungie. This new studio is currently working on an ambitious debut project that has sparked excitement among gaming enthusiasts. According to Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, this project is something he is "very excited about."
The name teamLFG, which stands for ‘Looking For Group,’ reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world set within a brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.
teamLFG's mission is to foster friendship, community, and belonging through their games. They aim to create an environment where players can log on and find their teammates already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments and stories from their gameplay. The studio emphasizes the importance of player feedback, planning to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests and maintaining flexibility to adapt the game based on ongoing player input throughout its live service.
“We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff.
“We will make immersive multiplayer worlds propelled by action games that players can learn, play, and master for countless hours. We want to build our games with our communities, inviting players to be a part of our development process through early access playtests. It’s critical that we stay nimble enough to react to player feedback, not just in our lead-up to launch, but throughout live service as we continue to grow the game and community for years to come.”

teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that was spun out of Bungie following significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024. After Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to the layoffs of about 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024. During these layoffs, 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project that would become teamLFG's first game was announced.
Amidst these changes, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in implementing improvements to Destiny 2, suggesting that the parent company's involvement was beneficial. Since then, Bungie has unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for a Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
