Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC release has sparked controversy over the mandatory installation of Epic Online Services (EOS), even for Steam users who don't utilize crossplay.

EOS: A Crossplay Requirement

Epic Games confirmed to Eurogamer that crossplay across all PC storefronts is mandatory for multiplayer games on the Epic Games Store. While Focus Entertainment clarified that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't required to play, EOS is the designated method for achieving this crossplay functionality. Developers on the Epic Games Store are free to choose their method, but EOS offers a convenient, free solution that fulfills Epic's requirements.

Player Backlash

The mandatory EOS installation has drawn significant criticism. Concerns include the perceived "spyware" nature of the additional software, and a general preference to avoid Epic's ecosystem. This resulted in negative Steam reviews focusing primarily on the unannounced EOS requirement, despite it being separate from the Epic Games launcher. The lengthy EOS EULA, and its implications for data collection in specific regions, further fueled the negative response.
