Deadlock Changes from Four Lanes to Three in New Major Update
Deadlock is shaking things up with its biggest update in months: a dramatic shift from four lanes to three. Read on to discover the details of this significant gameplay overhaul and other exciting updates.
Deadlock Announces Major Update
From Four Lanes to Three: A Map Redesign
Deadlock's latest update simplifies its map structure, transforming the four-lane battlefield into a more streamlined three-lane experience. Valve announced these changes, along with numerous other adjustments, on Steam on February 26, 2025.
The redesign encompasses far more than just lane reduction. The update includes sweeping changes to visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakable objects, power-up buffs, juke spots, and even the mid-boss encounter. While Deadlock's unique third-person perspective in the MOBA genre sets it apart, the previous four-lane design may have added unnecessary complexity.
Farming enemy troopers has also been simplified. Players no longer need to last-hit enemies to summon Soul Orbs, making early-game resource gathering significantly easier. The patch notes also highlight improvements to netcode and client performance.
A Vital Update for Deadlock's Future
This substantial update could be the key to reigniting community interest. Deadlock experienced a remarkable surge in popularity in September 2024, reaching an all-time peak of 171,490 concurrent players. However, player numbers have since dropped by approximately 90%, with only around 17,000 players active last month.
In January 2025, Valve Developer Yoshi explained the shift in the update schedule on Deadlock's Discord server. The previous two-week patch cycle proved too restrictive, hindering the team's ability to implement desired changes. Yoshi stated, "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year."
Deadlock is currently in active development and playtesting, accessible via friend invite only. An official release date has yet to be announced. For more information, visit our Deadlock game page.
