The Xbox Showcase unveiled Invincible VS, an upcoming 3v3 fighting game inspired by Robert Kirkman's superhero universe. During IGN Live, we spoke with Skybound's Quarter Up team about how they're blending Killer Instinct mechanics with Invincible's iconic team battles.

The roster features beloved characters like Mark Grayson (Invincible), Omni-Man, Atom Eve, and Bulletproof. According to art director Dan Eder and combat designer Reepal Parbhoo, the series' emphasis on superhero teams naturally lent itself to the 3v3 format.

"Invincible's universe thrives on team dynamics," Parbhoo explained. "Whether it's Teen Team, Guardians of the Globe, or the Viltrumites, multilple-character battles capture the essence better than solo fights."

The development prioritized authentic character representation while establishing a distinct visual identity. "We balanced realistic lighting with stylized outlines," Eder noted. "The comic and show provided rich references - we just needed to adapt them thoughtfully for gameplay."

The combat system reflects Quarter Up's Killer Instinct heritage through its emphasis on intense clashes and counterplay mechanics. Parbhoo detailed how they evolved Killer Instinct's combo-breaking system: "We've strategically placed interruption moments during assist calls to maintain thrilling, extended combos."

Accessibility remains key - simplified controls allow casual players to execute combos through single-button inputs. The brutal Overkill system stays true to Invincible's trademark violence, potentially dismembering opponents during intense exchanges.

With Robert Kirkman creatively involved, the team ensures authenticity while expanding the universe. "We're not just recreating moments," Eder emphasized. "Kirkman helps us innovate while respecting the source material he co-created with Ottley and Walker."
