Mass Effect Composer Explains Absence From Third Game

Feb 23,25

Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from Mass Effect 3's soundtrack, a departure that surprised fans given his contributions to the acclaimed scores of the first two games. Wall collaborated with BioWare on the distinctive 80s-inspired soundtracks for the original Mass Effect (2007) and its highly-regarded sequel, Mass Effect 2 (2010). The latter's soundtrack, featuring the iconic "Suicide Mission" track, is frequently cited as a series highlight.

However, Wall's absence from the 2012 Mass Effect 3 soundtrack remains a topic of discussion. A recent interview with The Guardian sheds light on the situation, attributing the split to disagreements with then-Mass Effect lead Casey Hudson. Wall stated, "Casey wasn't particularly happy with me at the end," acknowledging creative differences while expressing pride in the Bafta-nominated Mass Effect 2 score.

While The Guardian alluded to "creative tension," Wall kept specifics vague, characterizing the fallout as a common occurrence in the industry. He did, however, elaborate on the intense challenges of completing Mass Effect 2's score, particularly the "Suicide Mission" sequence, offering a possible context for the strained relationship. He described the process as "the most mind-boggling thing I've ever done," highlighting the pressure and lack of support during the game's frantic final stages. Despite the difficulties, he considers the result a triumphant achievement.

Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, recently completing the score for Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently focused on the next Mass Effect installment after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has yet to announce its composer for the upcoming title.
