"Jump Ship Preview: Sea of Thieves and Left 4 Dead Blend, Now More Polished and Fun"

May 04,25

It was almost exactly one year ago at the Game Developer’s Conference that I first encountered Jump Ship, a captivating four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that ingeniously combines elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL. Having recently played the latest build alongside some of the developers, I am convinced that if any indie game is poised to make a significant impact in this year's crowded release calendar, Jump Ship is a top contender. As it approaches its Early Access launch this Summer, the game is more refined and enjoyable than ever before.

For those unfamiliar with Jump Ship, it's a delightful, non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Importantly, the team at Keepsake Games is crafting an experience that can be savored by solo players as well, thanks to narratively rich AI assistants that help manage the ship. This feature is introduced in the Prologue, which serves dual purposes as both a tutorial and a lore-builder. The Prologue acquaints players with essential mechanics such as shooting, navigating in a space suit, and piloting the ship through combat scenarios.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling narrative woven into its core PvE gameplay. The plot revolves around a galaxy-wide machine infection caused by a malicious virus, and it's up to you and your fellow Atirans to reach the heart of the galaxy and eradicate it. You'll navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector, with mission durations ranging from 10 minutes to an hour. The Jump Map employs a color-coding system for your branching choices, indicating the level of danger and potential rewards you're stepping into.

An uninfected AI named Iris, introduced in the Prologue, serves as a guiding narrator throughout your missions, adding a welcome layer of structure to the robust gameplay. The Hangar acts as your operational hub, where you can spend in-game currency on outfit customization, explore the greater Galaxy Map, and even partake in some recreational soccer.

The heart of Jump Ship lies in its exhilarating four-player gameplay. Missions rarely go as planned; en route to your destination, your ship may come under attack. This requires one player to pilot and use the ship’s limited weaponry, while another operates the ship's main weapon station, controlling a 360-degree cannon. Meanwhile, the remaining players could be outside, magnetically attached to the hull, fending off enemy ships. If the ship sustains damage, someone must rush inside, grab a fire extinguisher, navigate the vents, and douse the flames—ensuring the spaceship's essential functions, like the pineapple pizza-maker, remain operational!

Upon reaching your destination, all four players disembark to infiltrate the structure holding your target loot. Facing relentless waves of hostile, virus-infected robots requires seamless teamwork. Your grappling hook facilitates swift movement both on the ground and in space, essential for navigating the environment and retrieving the loot. Once secured, one player must transport it back to the ship while the others provide cover, ensuring the safe return of your prize.

My demo experiences, both last year and recently, were brief but incredibly engaging. This confirms Jump Ship's potential for fun in short sessions, making it accessible without demanding a significant time commitment. However, I haven’t yet explored enough of the broader mission structure and the variety offered by its procedurally generated content to fully assess its promise of endless replayability. Yet, everything I've seen so far suggests Jump Ship is on the brink of becoming a standout hit, blending all the right elements to create a truly special gaming experience. I eagerly anticipate diving deeper into this exciting world.
