Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says
Sony reportedly declined a sequel to the PlayStation 4 game, *The Order: 1886*, due to its lukewarm critical reception, according to Andrea Pessino, co-founder of the game's developer, Ready at Dawn. In a conversation with MinnMax, Pessino revealed that despite the game's poor reviews, Ready at Dawn was eager to create an "incredible" sequel, driven by a passion to deliver for the fans. *The Order: 1886*, released in 2015, was an action-packed title set in Victorian London, featuring werewolves and boasting some of the best graphics of its time. However, it didn't resonate well with critics.
"It would have been an incredible sequel, I can tell you that for a fact," Pessino stated, though he was limited in what he could share due to not owning the franchise rights. Despite the initial game's reception, Ready at Dawn pitched the sequel to Sony, but Sony passed on the opportunity. Pessino reflected that it might have been for the best, as the conditions for making the sequel would have been even more challenging. "We pitched the sequel to Sony regardless of [the critical reception] and, in a way, it's better that they passed because if we thought we were going to be screwed before, man, with the sequel, we would have signed our life away."
The development of the original game was fraught with difficulties, as Pessino explained. Ready at Dawn had a strained relationship with Sony, which led to the team having to cut numerous elements to meet deadlines, ultimately releasing *The Order: 1886* before it was fully ready. Sony's expectations were set high by the game's initial graphical showcases, and when Ready at Dawn couldn't maintain those standards due to other priorities, payments were withheld. This, Pessino noted, is standard practice for third-party publishers but resulted in a frustrating dynamic with Sony.
Despite these challenges, Ready at Dawn was willing to accept even tougher conditions to develop a sequel. "We were going to do it just because we wanted to deliver it to the players but we would have been... Terrible budget, budget would be small, we would have been completely at the mercy of any decisions and things because we had no leverage whatsoever," Pessino explained. The team's desire to redeem the franchise was strong, as they believed the groundwork laid in the original game was solid and deserved further development.
*The Order: 1886* ended on a cliffhanger, leaving fans eager for a continuation. However, with Ready at Dawn being shut down by its owner, Meta, in 2024, those hopes have been extinguished. In IGN's review, which scored the game a 6/10, it was noted that "Though a stylish adventure, *The Order: 1886* emphasizes its cinematic polish at the crippling cost of gameplay freedom."
