Bloodborne's 10th Anniversary: Fans Rally for Yharnam Return Amidst No Sequel or Next-Gen Update

Jun 15,25

Bloodborne celebrates its 10th anniversary today, and fans are once again organizing a return to Yharnam with a special community event.

FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 title launched on March 24, 2015, earning widespread praise that helped elevate the Japanese studio into one of the most respected developers in gaming history. Commercial success followed, and many assumed a sequel or enhanced version was inevitable—especially given the precedent set by the Dark Souls series.

Yet, over the years, nothing substantial has materialized. Why hasn’t Sony pursued a current-gen remaster, a full sequel, or even a next-gen patch to enable official 60fps support? Bloodborne enthusiasts have been vocal in their requests for more since day one. The continued silence from Sony remains one of the industry's most baffling decisions.

PlayEarlier this year, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a theory following his departure from Sony. It’s important to note that this was his personal opinion—not an official statement or insider revelation from within Sony.

“Bloodborne has always been the most asked about,” Yoshida said. “People wonder why we haven’t done anything—even just an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters. Some people get frustrated.”

He continued, “I have only my personal theory. I left first-party, so I don’t know what’s going on now. But my theory is that Miyazaki-san really loved Bloodborne. He created it and he’s interested, but he’s so successful and busy—he doesn’t want to do it himself, but he also doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. That’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respects his wish. So that’s my guess. Just a theory. I’m not revealing any secret information, to be clear.”

Miyazaki-san refers to Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary leader of FromSoftware. Indeed, he has become increasingly occupied since Bloodborne’s release. Following the game’s launch, Miyazaki directed Dark Souls 3, then Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for Activision, and most recently, Elden Ring for Bandai Namco—a global phenomenon that has led to a multiplayer spin-off slated for release this year.

In interviews, Miyazaki often sidesteps questions about a Bloodborne follow-up, citing the fact that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, during an interview last year, he did acknowledge that the game would benefit from being available on modern hardware.

With no official updates forthcoming, modders have stepped in to enhance the experience. Among them is Lance McDonald, a well-known Bloodborne modder, who announced in January that he received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting removal of his 60fps patch links—which he complied with after four years of hosting them.

Shortly afterward, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart) and the popular Bloodborne PSX demake, tweeted that an old video of her demake had received a copyright claim.

More recently, breakthroughs in PS4 emulation via ShadPS4 have enabled Bloodborne to run natively on PC at a smooth 60fps. Digital Foundry published a detailed breakdown of this achievement, raising speculation over whether such progress might prompt a stronger legal response from Sony. IGN reached out to Sony for comment at the time, but has yet to receive a reply.

Given the current landscape, it seems Bloodborne fans will continue to keep the spirit alive through grassroots efforts like the Return to Yharnam events. Today marks another such celebration, where players are encouraged to create new characters, summon random co-op partners and invaders, and leave in-game messages indicating they’re part of the anniversary festivities.

It may very well remain this way forever.
