Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Move for the Esports World Cup

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament is making headlines with its surprising inclusion of chess, a game with millennia of history. This partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) marks a significant moment for the ancient game's transition into the esports world.

Chess Officially Recognized as an Esport

The EWC, a leading global gaming and esports festival, will feature competitive chess for the first time. EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," emphasizing its global appeal and vibrant competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader audience. Carlsen expressed his excitement about the opportunity to introduce chess to new audiences and inspire future players.

The EWC chess competition will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, boasting a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a spot in the EWC's inaugural chess esports event.

To engage a wider esports audience, the 2025 CCT will utilize a faster-paced 10-minute time control format, replacing the traditional 90-minute control used in world championships. Armageddon tiebreakers will be implemented.

Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has evolved and captivated audiences across generations. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its reach, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by media attention, including streaming platforms and shows like "The Queen's Gambit."

This official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans to the game.
