Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.

The asynchronous messaging system, allowing players to leave messages for one another, has been a key element of player interaction and engagement in previous FromSoftware titles. However, Ishizaki explained to IGN Japan that this feature would be detrimental to the streamlined, intense experience they aim to create in Nightreign.

Maintaining Asynchronous Features

While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features will return, enhanced. The bloodstain mechanic, allowing players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen players, will be significantly improved. This decision aligns with FromSoftware's goal of creating a "compressed RPG" with high intensity and minimal downtime. The game's three-day structure also contributes to this vision.

Compressed RPG Experience

FromSoftware aims for a more consistently intense and multiplayer-focused experience in Nightreign compared to the original Elden Ring. The omission of the messaging system contributes to this "compressed" design, prioritizing a faster pace and more focused gameplay.

Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed at TGA 2024, though a more precise release date is yet to be announced.
