Civilization 7 Patch 1.0.1 Addresses Some of the Negative Feedback From Advanced Access

Mar 21,25

Firaxis Games, the developer behind Civilization VII, has released patch 1.0.1, timed perfectly with the strategy game's full launch. The game's advanced access period garnered mixed Steam reviews, prompting Firaxis to address numerous community concerns. These primarily focus on the user interface, a perceived lack of map diversity, and the feeling that several key features are missing.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged the negative press and player feedback surrounding Civilization VII's launch. However, he expressed confidence that the game's core audience will warm to it with continued play, describing its initial performance as "very encouraging."

Now available to all players, not just those with early access, Civilization VII receives Patch 2 (PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck only). Firaxis, in a Steam post, describes this as the first of several planned patches designed to incorporate player feedback from the advanced access period. The full patch notes are detailed below.

It's important to note that cross-play multiplayer has been temporarily disabled to streamline PC updates. This means PC patches may be released at a different pace than console patches. However, Firaxis clarifies this will not affect console-to-console cross-play or PC-to-PC multiplayer.

Civilization 7 1.0.1 Patch 2 - February 10, 2025

Gameplay (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Fixed an issue causing shorter-than-intended Ages in Epic and Marathon speed games.
  • City-States now transition into Friendly Independent Powers during Age transitions instead of disappearing. They also start with more units in the Exploration and Modern Ages.
  • Resolved inconsistencies in Naval Combat:
    • Naval Units now use correct Combat Strength values when attacking other Naval Units.
    • Naval Units now receive proper reciprocal damage after attacking.
    • Naval Units move more consistently to the attacked tile after victory.
  • Completing a Legacy Path's final milestone no longer grants Modern Age progress, allowing more time for victory completion.
  • Towns automatically switch focus back to growth if their chosen focus becomes ineligible (e.g., population decrease).
  • The Future Civic is now repeatable in all Ages. The cost of Future Tech and Future Civic now increases more with repetition.
  • Fixed an issue where excessive growth bonuses resulted in negative food needed for the next growth event.
  • Improved Rail Networks, increasing the reliability of Settlements connecting to the network over water via Ports. This works if the Capital has a Port or is rail-connected to a settlement with a Port.
  • Improved the Antiquity Age Loyalty Crisis, including the ability to purchase Villas in towns during the crisis to manage happiness.

A note about cross-play multiplayer: To expedite PC updates, patches will sometimes be deployed at a different cadence than on consoles—including today's Patch 1.0.1. Therefore, cross-play between PC and console players is temporarily disabled. This does not affect console-to-console or PC-to-PC multiplayer.

AI (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • AI now offers high-value Cities less frequently during Peace Deals.
  • In the Modern Age, AI declares war less often at the age's start.
  • In the Modern Age, AI considers Ideology more before declaring war or offering peace.
  • Other Leaders have a decreased desire for war if neither party has an Ideology.
  • Other Leaders have an increased desire for war with players of opposing ideologies.
  • Other Leaders have a decreased desire for peace with players of opposing ideologies.

Camera (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Fixed an issue on native resolutions where the camera focused on the map's lower end when clicking the minimap.

UI (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Replaced the Simplified Chinese font with the Civilization VI font, pending future improvements.
  • Fixed an issue preventing the Settlement menu from opening when clicking a non-player's Settlement Banner.
  • Fixed an issue where yield icons didn't populate on buildings when converting a town to a city.
  • Fixed an issue where some text was cut off on the Global Yields Breakdown screen.
  • Added a notification for completed Espionage actions.
  • City projects no longer appear purchasable.
  • Your current religion is now displayed first in the belief picker tabs.
  • Fixed an issue where a District’s health bar remained on-screen after healing.
  • Fixed an issue where Leaders lacked portraits after relationship changes during gameplay.
  • Improved the alignment of leader names and portraits on the Age Summary in the Victories Rankings Overview screen.
  • Fixed an issue where the background color remained default despite user changes in the Player Customize tab.
  • Improved spacing between Civ descriptions, unique units, and building icons on the loading screen.
