Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Roots

Following the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that prioritizes classic Doom gameplay over the more complex mechanics of its predecessor. Instead of focusing on platforming, The Dark Ages emphasizes intense, close-quarters combat with a heavy reliance on strafing and powerful weaponry.

While the signature arsenal returns, including the skull-crushing new weapon showcased in the reveal trailer, melee combat takes center stage. Three melee weapons – an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the Shield Saw – offer diverse tactical options, encouraging aggressive, up-close fighting. Game director Hugo Martin describes the combat as "stand and fight," a deliberate departure from Doom Eternal's more mobile style.

Inspiration for The Dark Ages draws heavily from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300. This influence is evident in the game's design, featuring large-scale combat encounters reminiscent of the iconic films and the original game's arena-style battles. The Glory Kill system has been redesigned for increased fluidity, allowing for kills from any angle. Level design also sees a return to a more straightforward approach, with shorter levels averaging around an hour of gameplay.

Addressing player feedback regarding Doom Eternal's convoluted narrative, The Dark Ages presents its story through cutscenes rather than in-game codex entries. The narrative promises a large-scale adventure, described as a "summer blockbuster event," focusing on the Slayer's power and the threats against him.

The game also simplifies its control scheme, aiming for intuitive gameplay. Melee weapons are equipped individually, and the in-game economy is streamlined to a single currency (gold). Secrets and hidden treasures provide tangible gameplay rewards, enhancing player progression. A customizable difficulty system allows players to fine-tune the challenge to their preference.

Showcased in the reveal trailer, the giant Atlan mech and cybernetic dragon mounts are not isolated encounters but feature unique abilities and mini-boss battles. Multiplayer has been omitted to focus development resources on crafting the best possible single-player experience.

Martin emphasizes a conscious departure from Doom Eternal's design philosophy, aiming for a return to the core principles of the original Doom. The focus is on delivering a powerful, yet classic, Doom experience. The game's release date is set for May 15th.
